Caring For Your Reno Home

Since we, in the Reno area live in 4 different seasons, I thought it would be helpful to give you  some home maintenance tips Preventative maintenance is the best way to keep your Reno area home in good shape. Did you know that regular maintenance of the systems and appliances will increase their efficiency and help them have a longer life expectancy?

It can help reduce the number of repairs you have and think about this….when and if you decide to sell your home, your major systems will be in clean and good working condition, which means you will get the best possible price.

  • Heating/Air Conditioning: Have the HVAC system checked and cleaned Annually.  Be sure to change or clean the filters every 2-3 months.
  • Water Heater: make sure the water heater  is secure and check for any leaks.
  • Smoke Detectors: check batteries and test the units regularly.
  • Gutters /Downspouts: clean gutters and downspouts. Make sure they are secure.
  • Shower Enclosures:    check for leaks and and replace grout or caulk.
  • Faucets: check all faucets for drips and leaks.
  • Washer/Dryer: In addition to cleaning the lint filter each time you use the dryer, inspect the washer hookups for leaks. clean out the exhaust vent system and underneath the dryer.
  • Garage Door Opener: test the opener, clean and lubricate the hinges, rollers and the tracks.
  • Fire Extinguisher: Check that your fire extinguishers are fully charged, and re-charge if you have to. Be  sure everyone in your family knows where the fire extinguishers are kept and how to use them.
  • Make sure you know where the main shut off valves are or where the switches are for your home’s gas and electrical service and plumbing system.

    I think the tips in this article are very helpful. I had a furnace issue where the air coming through the vents was warm, but just not enough of it. I actually took a look at my filters and realized how dirty they were. Once I changed them out, my furnace worked great.
